Tonight was our last round of this tournament. Ed achieved a winning position but it was not easy to find the correct way to win. Andrew defended very well and achieved the draw. Ed did win the tournament with an outstanding 5.5-.5 result. Congrats Ed! Here is their game. I have asked Ed to annotate this game and he graciously obliged. It will be added here shortly.

Tonight we saw Ed win again against a very strong player in Jeff P. Ed has now won 5 out of 5 and will be looking to make it a perfect 6 out of 6 next week. Congratulations to him on his great tournament. Andrew also won against Barry (Coach Bear as we call him) in a French Defense. Andrew is a talented player and making big strides in his improvement. Congratulations Andrew. The other notable performance is of Dianxun Xu who won his game against Daniel Stephens. It appears as if Dianxun has raised his rating about 100 points thus far. Tonight was our final round. In the Over 1900 section, Craig won against Gregg in a game where it seemed there were chances for Gregg to pull the upset. However, Craig defended well, created a strong passed d pawn that gave him very good counterplay and Gregg was unable to find the right continuation to stop it. In my game versus Barry, I had a won position from move 19 on but had a hard time finding a forced win. I then missed a winning tactic with 2 seconds remaining on my clock and Barry was able to set up a blockade to give him the draw.

In the Under 1900 section, Peter came away with another strong performance to win first place honors in this section. Daniel also had a strong tournament to finish in clear second. Congratulations to you all! Here are the results. Next week we will either have a one night, 3 round G/30 with a 5 sec delay or begin another one section Swiss. We will take a vote to see what the majority is. We hope you come and check us out!

Tonight was our 5th and final round. 4 more players came in to join our tournament. I want to welcome all of you to our Academy and hope your experiences with us are enjoyable. In the games, Cody won to win first place. Congratulations Cody! Wael won as well to wrap up the Top A trophy. Gregg had a late meeting and was unable to make it in time for the start but still was able to secure second place.

We will start our next tournament in two weeks as next week is the Scholastic SuperNationals where over 5000 youngsters will be competing in the USA Elementary, Junior High, and High School Championship. Garry Kasparov will be there as well signing books and giving a question and answer session. The students Barry and I are taking are excited to see him and hopefully meet him.

For this next tournament, we are thinking of making it a double quad meaning the top 4 rated players will play against two games (6 weeks) against each other, the next 4 highest rated players will do the same and so on. We are thinking a double quad alternating with a swiss will be a good mix for everyone. But, of course, it will be up to the players who come on what format they would like to play. We start at 7:30pm. Registeration will be from 6:30-7:15. We hope to see you.

By the way, the online chess publisher I use to show games and replay them has had their internet account suspended. I believe they will be working out these details here soon and the games will be back on so you can again play over them.

Tonight, we began a 5 round tournament with 7 players being present. It is a strong group with an average USCF rating of 1929. In the games, Eren won against Cody in a game that is shown below. Brenda and Gregg had a tough one that found Gregg eventually being able to get at Brenda's king. She said she had miscalculated a move. Barry and Wael's game was a very dynamic game where there were chances for both sides. Wael won a piece in a nice combination but wound up losing it back in some time trouble. After, Barry was able to use good technique to win the game. Our next round is this coming Thursday. If you wish to play, you will receive a 1/2 point bye for the first round.

Since our last tournament, we have been gathering to analyze, play blitz, joke around, and hang out. It is a strong group with myself (USCF 2212), Cua Duong Le (USCF 2220), Gregg Fritchle (1983), Barry Lazarus (1939), as well as some others who come in every so often. If and when we get more players come, we will go back to a tournament format. If you would like to come and see what is going on, you are always welcome.

We have changed our format to one day events. We will alternate between three events for now. They will be:

A 4 round, USCF rated Action tournament with prizes
A double round robin, G/10 Quick tournament with prizes.
A USCF rated stepladder game. This is where you play the next highest rated player to you in on game. The time control is G/2. The fee for this is $5/week.

Therefore, next week, we will have the 4 round action tournament. Entry fee is $15. It will be USCF rated. The time control will be G/30 with a 5 second delay. 80% of the entry fees will be returned as prizes. The awarding of prizes will be spread out throughout the rating levels.
